For anyone figuring out how to get around Townsville, the city is fairly manageable once the available transport options are clear.

Townsville is one of North Queensland’s largest cities and has a functional public bus network, ferry connections to nearby islands, rideshare services, taxis, and a decent road system for those driving.

Each option suits different needs depending on the destination, time of day, and budget.

Bus Services in Townsville

The main public transport option in Townsville is the local bus network. Kinetic operates 13 bus routes across the city on behalf of the Queensland Government.

These routes cover the city centre, residential suburbs, major shopping centres, James Cook University, and Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

During peak hours, buses run more frequently, which makes them a reliable choice for weekday travel.

Outside of those hours, services can be less frequent, so checking the timetable in advance is worthwhile.

You can pay cash for tickets right on the bus. For anyone using the bus regularly, the go card is the more practical option — it works across multiple trips and is accepted on all Townsville bus services.

Timetables, journey planning, and fare information are available on the Translink website. Service updates and charter enquiries can be directed to Kinetic’s Townsville page.

Ferry Services

Two ferry routes operate out of Townsville, both run by SeaLink North Queensland.

The most widely used service connects the Townsville mainland to Magnetic Island, with up to 17 return sailings each day. The crossing to Nelly Bay Terminal takes around 20 minutes. Ferries on this route carry passengers and bicycles but not private vehicles.

The second route serves Palm Island, with six services per week. This route primarily exists to serve the Indigenous community living on the island.

Booking details, fares, and current timetables are listed on the SeaLink North Queensland website.

Train Travel

Townsville does not have a local or suburban rail network.

The only rail services available are long-distance, operated by Queensland Rail Travel, connecting Townsville to other regional cities across Queensland.

For anyone needing train information, there are two access points in the city:

  • Townsville Railway Station — handles departures and arrivals
  • Townsville Travel Centre — provides booking and travel planning assistance

For travel within Townsville itself, buses, taxis, or rideshare are the practical alternatives.

Rideshare Options

Uber

Uber runs 24 hours a day across Townsville. Rides are booked through the Uber app, available on iPhone and Android.

One thing worth knowing — pickup wait times in Townsville tend to be longer than in larger cities like Brisbane or Sydney.

For time-sensitive trips, Uber Reserve allows rides to be booked up to 90 days in advance, which removes the uncertainty of waiting for an available driver.

Uber also operates at Townsville Airport, with specific pickup and drop-off information available through its TSV airport page.

DiDi

DiDi is the other rideshare option in Townsville. This application may be downloaded from both the App Store and Google Play. Like Uber, it operates on demand across the city.

Taxi Services

Taxis operate throughout Townsville at all hours. Two companies provide services in the area:

13cabs covers the Townsville region and can be booked online or by calling 132 227.

Taxis from Black and White Cabs serve Townsville and Magnetic Island. Bookings are available online or by calling 133 222.

Both services are useful for travel outside regular bus hours or when a direct, door-to-door ride is needed.

E-Scooters

Electric scooter hire is available in parts of Townsville, specifically in the city centre, around Castle Hill, and along The Strand.

These are suited for short trips within those areas rather than cross-city travel.

There are currently no e-bike hire services operating in Townsville. Any company offering commercial e-scooter hire is required to hold a valid permit from Townsville City Council.

Cycling

Townsville has a reasonable cycling infrastructure. The terrain is relatively flat across most of the city, and dedicated cycling paths connect several key areas including The Strand and Castle Hill.

The tropical climate does affect cycling comfort, particularly between November and April when temperatures and humidity are at their highest. During cooler months, cycling is a more practical day-to-day transport option.

Walking

Walking works well for short distances within the city centre and coastal areas. Footpaths and pedestrian crossings are well-maintained in central Townsville.

For longer distances between suburbs or attractions, walking becomes less practical — particularly during the warmer months.

Most visitors and residents combine walking with another transport mode for anything beyond the immediate city area.

Driving in Townsville

The road network in Townsville is well-maintained and traffic is generally moderate compared to Australia’s major cities.

The Bruce Highway is the main arterial road connecting Townsville to other parts of Queensland, both north and south.

Parking in the city is managed through a dedicated parking app, which covers most of the central zones. Paid parking applies in various parts of the CBD.

Car rentals are available through several providers at Townsville Airport and within the city. Uber also connects users with rental options through its app.

Getting To and From Townsville Airport (TSV)

Townsville Airport sits approximately five kilometres from the city centre. Transport options between the airport and the city include:

  • Uber and DiDi for on-demand or pre-scheduled rides
  • Within the Townsville region, tourists have the option of utilizing local taxi services, the most common of which         being 13cabs and Black and White Cabs.
  • Car rental available at the terminal

Uber’s TSV airport page provides pickup point details and estimated fare information for common routes.

Final Thoughts

Buses cover the main suburban routes, ferries connect the islands, and rideshare or taxis fill the gaps where public transport falls short.

For anyone spending time in the city, understanding these options makes moving around considerably more straightforward.
