Reaching Khao Sok National Park from Phuket takes roughly 3 to 4 hours by road. A day trip to Cheow Lan Lake is possible, but an overnight stay gives you more time to enjoy the area.
You can travel by public bus, private transfer or organized tour. The best option depends on whether you want to explore the jungle village, visit the lake or experience both.
Distance and Travel Time
Khao Sok has two main visitor areas, and travel time depends on which one you choose.
- Khao Sok village and park headquarters: About 150–160 km from Phuket Town and around 130 km from Phuket Airport. Drivers often allow 3–3.5 hours, although the journey may take longer with traffic.
- Cheow Lan Lake pier: Roughly 220 km from Phuket Town. Tours commonly allow 3.5–4 hours each way.
Public buses from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 usually take about 3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours 20 minutes. These are estimates, so allow extra time for traffic and weather.
Khao Sok Village vs Cheow Lan Lake
The village and lake are about an hour apart by road, but they offer different experiences.
- Khao Sok village: Guesthouses, jungle lodges and tour offices near the park entrance. It is a convenient base for jungle walks, waterfalls, river activities and night safaris.
- Cheow Lan Lake: A reservoir behind Ratchaprapha Dam, known for limestone karsts, caves, kayaking and floating raft houses. You cannot drive to the lake itself; visitors board a longtail boat at the dam pier. The ride to a raft house usually takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes.
Buses stop near the village junction, around 1.8 km from the park entrance, rather than at the lake. To reach the dam, arrange a tour, private transfer or ride through your accommodation.
How to Get There
| Option | Typical time | Estimated cost | Best for |
| Public bus | 3 hr 40 min–4 hr 20 min | Varies by seller | Budget travelers staying in the village |
| Private transfer | 3–3.5 hours to the village | About 2,700–4,500 baht per vehicle, one way | Families, groups and flexible schedules |
| Shared lake day tour | 9–13 hours | About US$124–145 per adult in listings | Visiting the lake without arranging transport separately |
| Shared two-day tour | 2 days | About 4,200–6,500 baht per adult in listings | Visitors wanting a raft-house stay |
Public Bus
Phuket Bus 465, also sold as 465 Surat Thani Phuket Transport, runs from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 towards Takua Pa and Surat Thani, with a stop at Khao Sok.
Some services also pick up near Phuket Airport. One reseller lists departures at 06:00, 08:30, 11:00 and 13:40, but other platforms may show additional services.
Fares depend on the destination and seller. Check the current timetable and ticket price before travelling, and allow time to collect a paper ticket if your booking provider requires it.
Private Transfer
Private transfers are priced per vehicle, so sharing the cost with a group can make them more practical.
Operators quote roughly 2,700 baht for a sedan and around 4,500 baht for larger vehicles; airport pickups may cost more.
Ask whether the price includes tolls or fuel surcharges, and confirm whether the driver can take you directly to the lake pier.
Organized Tours

Tours from Phuket commonly bundle transport, a boat trip, lunch and a guide.
Lake itineraries may include the Khao Sam Kloe limestone karsts, often called the “Guilin of Thailand,” and a cave such as Pakarang (Coral) Cave.
Park admission and pier fees may be extra, so check the inclusions before booking. Private two-day packages can cost considerably more, with listings starting around 9,900 baht per person.
Day Trip or Overnight Stay?
A same-day visit to Cheow Lan Lake is possible, but leaves little time for exploring. Listings commonly show tours lasting 9–13 hours.
One example schedule includes a 6:30 am hotel pickup, arrival around 9:45 am, a four-hour longtail boat tour with lunch, departure around 2:30 pm and a return to Phuket around 6 pm.
Other tours start earlier and may not return until around 7 pm.
Expect several hours on the road for a relatively short visit to the lake. A day trip suits travelers with only one day available.
An overnight stay gives you more time. A typical two-day tour includes:
- Day 1: Travel from Phuket, take a boat to a raft house, then swim, kayak or join an evening wildlife cruise if one is offered.
- Day 2: Take an early boat ride, visit caves or viewpoints if included, return to the pier and travel back to Phuket.
If you have three days, consider spending one night in Khao Sok village and another on the lake.
What a Raft-House Night Is Like

Raft houses are often simple, with fan-cooled rooms, basic beds and shared bathrooms in cheaper options.
Electricity hours vary by property, and phone signals may be weak or unavailable.
Save offline maps and your reservation information before leaving. Mid-range and premium raft houses may offer air-conditioning and private bathrooms at higher prices.
Costs and Park Fees
Entrance fees depend on which area you visit. Recent travel-information sources report around 200 baht for foreign adults and 100 baht for children aged 3–14 at the headquarters area, and 300 baht for adults and 150 baht for children at Cheow Lan Lake.
Published information is not consistent, so confirm the current rates at the ticket counters before your visit. Thai citizens pay lower rates.
A pier fee of around 40 baht per person may apply to boat departures. Check whether your tour includes park admission, pier charges, meals and kayak rental. Carry cash for fees that cannot be paid electronically.
Other costs may include:
- Hiking guide: Published rates range from about 500–600 baht for a half-day hike and 1,000–1,500 baht for a full day, depending on the provider and what is included. Confirm the total price when booking.
- Coral Cave: Some listings show a separate adult entry fee of around 200 baht.
Hiking and Guide Rules
Some short, marked trails near the park headquarters can be explored without a guide.

Longer jungle hikes, cave routes, night safaris and lake-side treks may require a guide or advance arrangements.
Ask park rangers or your accommodation which trails are open and whether a guide is compulsory before setting out.
Access can change with weather and safety conditions, especially during the rainy season.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Khao Sok National Park is generally the drier period, roughly December to March, while April is often still fairly dry.
The wetter season usually runs from May to November, with September commonly among the wettest months.
Rainy months bring greener scenery and fuller waterfalls, but trails may be slippery and leeches more common. Showers can occur in any month.
The rare Rafflesia kerrii may bloom between roughly November and April, but sightings are unpredictable. Pack quick-drying clothes, waterproof closed shoes, a dry bag and insect repellent.
Where to Stay
Most visitors choose between accommodation in Khao Sok village and floating raft houses on Cheow Lan Lake.
- Khao Sok village: Guesthouses and jungle lodges near the park entrance. Indicative listings range from around 300 baht for a dorm bed to 800–2,500 baht for private bungalows or riverside cottages. Treehouses and boutique lodges may cost about US$50–130 or more per night.
- Cheow Lan Lake raft houses: Usually booked as a package. Shared packages for basic raft houses may start around 2,500 baht per person, with higher prices for air-conditioning and private bathrooms.
Prices vary by season, property and package, so confirm what is included before booking.
