Bangkok’s Coffee Scene: Quick Overview
Bangkok has one of the best cafe cultures in all of Asia. Thailand‘s coffee market reached 65 billion baht in 2025, growing 8.3% compared to 2024, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. In the first half of 2025 alone, 415 new coffee businesses opened in Thailand, with over 33% in Bangkok.
The average Thai person now drinks 340 cups of coffee per year, up from just 180 cups a few years ago. Bangkok is also hosting the World of Coffee 2026 event (May 7–9, 2026 at BITEC), which shows just how seriously the city takes its coffee scene globally.
Two types of coffee exist side by side here. On one street, you find modern specialty cafes serving single-origin beans with precision. On the next street, a vendor pours traditional Thai iced coffee the same way locals have enjoyed it for decades. Both are equally loved.
One thing new visitors often notice: almost every cafe asks “sweet or no sweet?” even for drinks like cappuccino. Simple syrup is usually on the table so you control the final sweetness yourself.

The ground floor has an industrial feel with dark walls and concrete floors. Upstairs is the highlight of large windows looking out over a lush green garden and the river. It feels calm and removed from the city, which is rare in central Bangkok.
The coffee is strong and nutty. The espresso tonic is the most recommended drink.

Roots sources 100% Thai coffee beans from farms in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hong Son. They run a “cup-to-farm” program where part of every sale goes back to the farmers. The menu rotates with the seasons.
